Just as reproduction gives rise to variation among species, iteration gives rise to variation among all natural phenomena. When cyclical activity diverges, systems can change. Similar to genetic drift, author D. B. Kelley calls this system drift, and it too is a vital evolutionary mechanism throughout Nature.
